CHECK
I - CHECKING PREPARATION OPERATION
- Position the vehicle on a two-post lift (see Vehicle:
Towing and lifting) (02A, Lifting equipment).
- Remove:
- the front wheel (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) ,
- the lower arm ball joint (see 31A, Front axle components,
Front driveshaft lower arm: Removal -
Refitting, page 31A-54) .
II - CHECKING THE PART CONCERNED
1 - Checking the condition of the front driveshaft
lower arm ball joint gaiter
- Check:
- the gaiter crimping on the front driveshaft lower
arm ball joint,
- that the gaiter of the lower arm ball joint gaiter of
the front driveshaft is not torn.
- that the grease starts to flow.
If the lower arm ball joint gaiter of the front driveshaft
is in poor condition or not crimped, replace the lower
arm of the front driveshaft (see 31A, Front axle
components, Front driveshaft lower arm: Removal
- Refitting, page 31A-54) .
2 - Check the fitting of the lower arm ball joint
- Manually check that the ball joint stud moves easily
and does not get jammed.
If the ball joint stud does not move easily, replace
the front driveshaft lower arm (see 31A, Front axle
components, Front driveshaft lower arm: Removal
- Refitting, page 31A-54) .
3 - Checking the longitudinal play of the lower arm
ball joint
- Check the longitudinal play by pulling on the stud
manually.
If the longitudinal play values (axle side) at the ball
joint stud are incorrect, replace the front driveshaft
lower arm (see 31A, Front axle components,
Front driveshaft lower arm: Removal - Refitting,
page 31A-54) .
The longitudinal play value of the lower arm ball joint
is 0 mm.
III - FINAL OPERATION
- Refit:
- the lower arm ball joint (see 31A, Front axle components,
Front driveshaft lower arm: Removal -
Refitting, page 31A-54) ,
- the front wheel (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) .
- Check the front axle geometry (see 30A, General
information, Front axle system: Adjustment,
page 30A-11) .
