REMOVAL
I - REMOVAL PREPARATION OPERATION
- Position the vehicle on a two-post lift (see Vehicle:
Towing and lifting) (02A, Lifting equipment).
- Remove:
- the front wheels (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) ,
- the front axle subframe (see 31A, Front axle components,
Front axle subframe: Removal - Refitting,
page 31A-58) .
II - OPERATION FOR REMOVAL OF PART
CONCERNED
- Remove:
- the steering box nuts (1) ,
- the steering box.
REFITTING
I - REFITTING PREPARATION OPERATION
- Always replace the universal joint bolt
- Set the wheels straight ahead.
II - REFITTING OPERATION FOR PART
CONCERNED
- Refit:
- the steering box,
- the steering box nuts.
- Torque tighten the steering box nuts (148 N.m).
III - FINAL OPERATION
- Refit:
- the front axle sub-frame (see 31A, Front axle
components, Front axle subframe: Removal -
Refitting, page 31A-58) ,
- the front wheels (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) .
- Adjust the front axle (see 30A, General information,
Front axle system: Adjustment, page 30A-
11) .

REMOVAL
I - REMOVAL PREPARATION OPERATION
- Position the vehicle on a two-post lift (see Vehicle:
Towing and lifting) (02A, Lifting equipment).
- Remove the front wheels (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) .
- Remove the steering cover (1) .
II - OPERATION FOR REMOVAL OF PART
CONCERNED
- Remove the cover (2) from the universal joint (do not
keep).
- Set the wheels straight ahead.
- Remove:
- the universal joint bolt (3) (do not keep),
- the universal joint nut (do not keep),
- the universal joint from the steering box.
- Remove the bulkhead seal (see 36A, Steering assembly,
Bulkhead seal: Removal - Refitting, page
36A-27) .
- Remove:
- the track rod ball joint nuts (5) ,
- the lower nuts (4) from the anti-roll bar tie rod.
Note:
It is necessary to rotate the anti-roll bar on itself
in order to make it easier to position the steering
box on the sub-frame cross member. |
- Extract the track rod end using the (Tav. 476) (6) .
- Tilt the anti-roll bar towards the rear of the vehicle.
- Remove the intermediate pipe (see Intermediate
pipe: Removal - Refitting) .
- Remove:
- the bolts (7) ,
- the heat shield (8) .
- Remove:
- the steering box bolts (9) ,
- the steering box towards the left-hand side of the
vehicle.
REFITTING
I - REFITTING PREPARATION OPERATION
- Always replace:
- the universal joint cam nut and bolt,
- the lower nuts of the anti-roll bar tie rod.
II - REFITTING OPERATION FOR PART
CONCERNED
- Refit:
- the steering box, inserting it from the left-hand side
of the vehicle,
- the steering box nuts,
- the heat shield,
- the heat shield bolts.
- Torque tighten
- the nuts of the steering box (148 N.m),
- the heat shield bolts (4 N.m).
- Refit the intermediate pipe (see Intermediate pipe:
Removal - Refitting) .
- Tilt the anti-roll bar back into its original position.
- Fit the track rod end in the hub carrier.
- Refit:
- the lower nuts of the anti-roll bar tie rod.
- the track rod ball joint nuts.
- Torque tighten:
- the lower nuts of the anti-roll bar tie rod (84
N.m),
- the track rod ball joint nuts (34 N.m).
- Refit the bulkhead seal (see 36A, Steering assembly,
Bulkhead seal: Removal - Refitting, page
36A-27) .
- Observe the direction of fitting for the universal joint
cam nut and bolt.
- Check that the universal joint is in the correct position.
- Refit:
- the universal joint on the steering box,
- the new universal joint bolt,
- the new cam nut on the universal joint.
- Tighten to torque the universal joint bolt on the
steering box (39 N.m).
III - FINAL OPERATION.
- Refit:
- the steering cover,
- the front wheels (see 35A, Wheels and tyres,
Wheel: Removal - Refitting, page 35A-1) .
- Adjust the front axle (see 30A, General information,
Front axle system: Adjustment, page 30A-
11) .

side of the vehicle,
- the steering box nuts,
- the heat shield,
- the heat shield bolts.
- Torque tighten
- the steering box bolts (148 N.m),
- the heat shield bolts (4 N.m).
- Refit the intermediate pipe (see Intermediate pipe:
Removal - Refitting) .
- Tilt the anti-roll bar back into its original position.
- Fit the track rod end in the hub carrier.
- Refit:
- the lower nuts of the anti-roll bar tie rod,
- the track rod ball joint nuts.
- Torque tighten:
